Iodine Deficiency and Thyroid Imbalance

Do you have an Iodine deficiency? 

Iodine Deficiency Disorders are one of the biggest worldwide public health problems.  The effects are hidden but profoundly affect the quality of life.  Iodine is a trace element essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones which regulate the metabolic pattern of most cells and play a vital role in the process of early growth and development of most organs.
Iodine deficiency is a significant cause of mental disorders in children including implications on reproductive functions and lowering of IQ levels in school-aged children.
Bromine is a common endocrine disrupter and if you are exposed to too much Bromine your body will not hold the Iodine it needs. It is found in many everyday places such as, pesticides, plastics, bakery goods (commonly flour), soft drinks and medications.
Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) originally categorized brominated vegetable oil (BVO) as "generally recognized as safe," the agency later reversed that decision. Currently, under certain conditions and on an interim basis pending more research, the FDA allows BVO to be used as a food additive.

Health concerns about BVO stem from the fact that it contains bromine, the element found in brominated flame retardants. Only a few studies have looked at possible safety issues, but it appears that bromine builds up in the body. There also have been a few reports of people experiencing memory loss and skin and nerve problems after drinking excessive amounts (more than 2 liters a day) of soda containing BVO. Some beverage manufacturers are even considering taking BVO out of their products.  In 2013 PepsiCo announced it would remove brominated vegetable oil (BVO) from its Gatorade drinks in response to customer concerns.  It's banned as a food additive in Europe and Japan but not in the U.S.  BVO is in some citrus soft drinks including Mountain Dew, Squirt, Fresca, and Fanta. It's also in sports drinks like Powerade and some pre-mixed cocktails.
The use of potassium bromate as an additive to commercial breads and baked goods has been a huge contributor to bromide overload in Western cultures.  Bromated flour is "enriched" with potassium bromate. Commercial baking companies claim it makes the dough more elastic and better able to stand up to bread hooks. However, Pepperidge Farm and other successful companies manage to use only unbromated flour without any of these so-called "structural problems."

Potassium bromate is also found in some toothpastes and mouthwashes, where it's added as an antiseptic and astringent. It has been found to cause bleeding and inflammation of gums in people using these products.

So what should you do? Don't drink large amounts of BVO-containing beverages. Better yet, take it one step further and cut back on all sugary drinks. Opt instead for healthier choices, such as water, low-fat milk and an occasional glass of 100-percent fruit juice.  Eat organic as often as possible.  Avoid storing and consuming products from plastic containers.  Look for organic or whole grain breads with bromine free labels.  Avoid chemical pollutants in skin products, hot tub chemicals and every day products found at high concentrations in buildings.  Also avoid unfermented soy products in order to keep your thyroid healthy.
Common Causes of Thyroid Imbalance
How you sleep, how easily you wake and the amount of energy and stamina you have throughout the day are directly related to thyroid levels.  Hypothyroidism is very common in the US and may cause symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, pale and cold skin, constipation, high cholesterol levels, weakness and joint pain.  Hyperthyroidism may result in weight loss, tremors, heart palpitations or rapid heartbeat and sleep difficulties.  You may exhibit all or some of these symptoms and imbalance may not always appear in standard thyroid panels.  
Environmental factors such as lack of sleep and stress levels may contribute to thyroid imbalance.  Deep breathing, lavender oil, yoga/ meditation/ stretching and elimination of electronics in the bedroom.
Food intolerance are a common cause of digestive problems but also there is a link to gluten intolerance/celiac disease and thyroid function.  Consumption of soy products and non-organic dairy can affect estrogen levels which affect the thyroid gland.  
Toxicity, chronic candidiasis and constipation have also been linked to thyroid imbalance.
